Headingley coaching job for Dawson

Dawson, 33, joins from Gloucestershire, where he has spent the last four years as the county’s specialist spin-bowling and one-day cricket coach.

The Doncaster-born offbreak bowler returns to Headingley, where he spent six seasons as a player between 2001 and 2006.

He helped Yorkshire win the County Championship in 2001 and the Cheltenham and Gloucester One-Day Trophy a year later.

He played 72 first-class matches for the white rose county, taking 157 wickets, and he played seven Test matches for England, taking 11 wickets.

“I am delighted to be working for Yorkshire,” said Dawson, who is also the England Performance Programme spin coach and will be heading out to the under 19s World Cup in the UAE with England later this week.

“I enjoyed six years as a player at Headingley and had some great times, including winning a couple of trophies.

“To have the opportunity to return and be part of the coaching staff is a real honour and a fresh challenge that I’m relishing.

“Yorkshire have a number exciting prospects coming through and to be part of their development over the next few years will be a major part of my role.

“This is a club that is heading in the right direction and I look forward to working alongside Martyn (Moxon), Dizzy (Jason Gillespie), the players and the rest of the coaching set-up.”

Moxon, Yorkshire’s Director of Cricket, said: “I am really pleased to have secured Richard as the club’s new second team coach,”

“He has been successful so far in his coaching career. Richard greatly impressed on interview and is highly thought of throughout the game.

“He will bring an understanding of what is required to become a Yorkshire cricketer. He will be a great asset in developing our players at all levels.”

Dawson will commence his duties on April 1, and will be in place for the opening match of the season against Leeds/Bradford MCCU, which starts on the same day.

He replaces Paul Farbrace, who left at the end of last year to become the national coach for Sri Lanka.
