Lees and Marsh latest

It wasn’t quite such a good second day for Calderdale rising stars Alex Lees and Nick Marsh on their overseas adventures.

Yorkshire batsman Lees is in South Africa with England Lions but he was unable to complete a century against a Gauteng Invitation XI in Soweto.

Resuming on 82, he added only three more before being caught at second slip.

England made 443 and then bowled out the hosts for 179. The tourists were 43 for three second time around with Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth (25), James Vince (6) and Sam Robson (1) the men out.

Marsh, the Halifax-born golfer, is playing in the Australian Master of the Amateurs tournament at the Royal Melbourne club.

He was joint second after an opening 69 but slipped to 13th after a second round 73.

However, the reigning English amateur champion was still only four shots behind leader Zach Murray from Australia.

Marsh eagled the long second hole for the second successive day but his only birdie came on 15 and he dropped shots on the fifth, seventh, 10th and 17th holes for a one over par 73.

Switching sports to darts, Pennine Housing carpenter and ex-Sowerby Bridge resident Scott Waites faces Scot Ross Montgomery in the second round of the BDO World Championship on Thursday evening.

Waites is a 4-9 chance while Montgomery is 2-1 to upset the 2013 event winner.

Waites beat Sam Hewson 3-2 in the first round while Montgomery knocked out England’s pip Blackwell 3-1.

The winner of tomorrow’s contest could face Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams, who is vying for event favouritism with Alan Norris.
