His main support came from professional Chris Schofield, who had a quiet first game but made his mark yesterday with 67 and then three for 31 as Burnley were limited to 135 for nine off 42 overs.

There were also two wickets each for Graham Lalor and Bilal Abbas.

Walsden are one of four clubs with maximum points after an impressive 103-run win away to Lowerhouse, the joint LCB Cup holders.

The Pennine League champions, one of several new teams in the Lancashire League this season, made 230 for seven and then bowled out their hosts for 127.

Umesh Karunaratne had an excellent 2017 with the bat and he has picked up where he left off, the Sri Lankan’s 88 not out helping the Scott Street side to a useful total.

Josh Gale made 56 and brother Joe hit 24 before following up with three for 22. Karunaratne took 3-44 and opening bowler Jamie Shackleton made it eight wickets in two games with three for 25 as Walsden showed they mean business in their new surroundings.
