Walsden in semis after bowl-off

Walsden are through to the semi-finals of the Pennine League's Wood Cup after a bowl-off win at home to arch rivals Norden yesterday.

The game was rained off after Walsden had made 224 in their 50 overs, having been sent in to bat.

Nick Barker hit 93 for the hosts with 10 fours and four maximums.

Norden were unable to start their reply and Walsden, who bowed out of the LCB Cup on a bowl-off at Ramsbottom a few weeks ago, came out on top this time.

All 11 players from each side had one attempt to hit the stumps and Barker, Calum Rushton and Joe Gale were on target as Walsden avenged a bowl-off defeat to the same rivals in the LCB Cup a couple of years ago by 3-2.

Rochdale, Littleborough and Saddleworth will be the other teams in the draw.

Lightcliffe’s hopes of progressing to the last four of the Bradford League’s Priestley Cup were thwarted by the weather.

Their game failed to start at Scholes and a new date will have to be found.

Pudsey St Lawrence and Woodlands are through to the semi-finals but the Bradford and Bingley versus Hanging Heaton tie will have to start again after play was abandoned early in second half.

Todmorden’s Lancashire League game away to champions Burnley was washed out after the champions had powered to 268 for six off their 50 overs.

Burnley-born Vishal Tripathi (75) and professional Chris Holt (116) put on 177 for the first wicket.

Tod skipper Andrew Sutcliffe and Hamza Ali each took three wickets to limit the damage.

In the Huddersfield League, Elland got a helping hand from the weather at Hoylandswaine but could not take advantage.

The hosts made 272 for seven declared after 44.2 overs with Michael Cranmer (81) and opener Gharib Nawaz (58) showing the way.

The Hullen Edge men were left chasing 159 to win after a rain break but limped to 73 for seven with Muhammad Wadee (41) the only visiting batsman to make an impact.
