Young cricketers all set for start of Halifax League season

The Halifax Junior Cricket League is preparing to begin its 2026 season with hundreds of matches set to take place across the spring and summer.

This year, there are 17 leagues featuring 121 teams from 31 different cricket clubs from Mytholmroyd to Lightcliffe, Stainland to Upper Hopton and Barkisland to Thornton. The strength of the league attracts clubs not just from Halifax but the surrounding areas too.

The first of over 600 matches start on Monday. April 20 will feature boys and girls from U9s all the way through to U18s with a mix of soft and hard ball cricket giving opportunities to as many young people as possible.

The league campaign takes over the early part of the season with the always hotly contested Collinson Cup beginning in July with teams competing through the summer before finals at the end of August.

Phil Sharples, Chair of the Halifax Junior Cricket League, said: “It’s amazing to see how many teams we have competing in this year’s Halifax Junior Cricket League giving more opportunities to more players at more clubs.

“Cricket across Yorkshire is thriving with hundreds and hundreds of young people from every part of every community getting the chance to experience cricket, develop a love for the game and make new friends while developing new skills.

“I can’t wait to see many of them in action in the weeks ahead and hope as many parents, family and friends as possible will come and cheer them on at our cricket clubs as one thing is guaranteed – you’ll never be far from a game of junior cricket in the weeks ahead.”
