Crocs beaten at Horsforth

Old Crossleyans passed up another winning opportunity when they lost 13-3 at Yarnbury in Yorkshire One yesterday.

While the matches involving local rivals Heath and Old Brodleians were postponed, Crocs were able to take to a soggy pitch at Horsforth.

They faced the wind in the first half and had high hopes when they turned round at 3-3 but fellow strugglers Yarnbury continued to have the upper hand and ran out worthy winners.

The hosts showed more enterprise while Crocs appeared to have little faith in a back line lacking Jack Hammond, keeping things tight.

Crocs got the early boost of Ryan Sweeney’s penalty from the 22 but had a let off almost immediately when Yarnbury appeared to have crossed in the corner but the referee awarded a lineout to Crocs and then a penalty, enabling the visitors to clear.

A long spell of attritional rugby followed with Yarnbury applying pressure. It eventually told with a penalty for offside and stand off Kieran Davies, who went on to score all the home points, made it 3-3 on 35 minutes.

The referee was constantly blowing his whistle and he eventually warned both sides.

The game’s only try came on 45 minutes. The Yarnbury right winger broke to the Crocs 22 and Davies took an inside pass to score by the posts and convert.

The visitors’ task became taller five minutes later when Sam Karlsen was yellow carded and Davies added another three points.

Crocs made little headway after that and Yarnbury had most of the play and pressure in the final quarter, being held up over the try line at the end.
