Disallowed Giles try is turning point

The scoreline doesn’t do the Ovenden Park men justice as they were in the game for long periods and had their chances to score before three late tries gave the hosts a more convincing win.

The match was delicately poised after a tough 40 minutes in difficult conditions. Wetherby - unbeaten in 35 matches - took their opportunities to cross for two tries.

However, Halifax remained in touch with a drop goal from Giles Hetherington and a Richard Cole penalty.

Heading towards the break, Halifax were trailing 15-6 when Hetherington broke away and appeared to have scored between the sticks, only for the referee to rule he had been held up.

The second half saw Halifax on the back foot as they struggled to get out their own 22. Some desperate defending was eventually breached when Wetherby powered over.

Halifax continued to press and really should have taken at least two of their chances.

However a quick-tap penalty saw the Wetherby No 8 cross in the corner with 15 minutes left to take the game away from the visitors.

Two breakaway tries in the final eight minutes gave the score a lop-sided look.

Halifax will now regroup ahead of Saturday’s clash against Rotherham Phoenix at Ovenden Park (3pm).
