Aldershot 1-3 FC Halifax Town: Wild says Shaymen's third win on the bounce shows they have "bags of character"

FC Halifax Town boss Pete Wild says his side passed a "test of character" in fighting back from trailing 1-0 at half-time to beat Aldershot 3-1.

The Shaymen shook off an out-of-sorts first-half, in which they trailed, to scored three goals in eight minutes, with two from Jake Hyde and one from Nyal Bell.

"We looked tired and turgid first-half. I think the week had caught up with us first-half," said Wild.

"Yet again it's not a penalty (for Aldershot's goal), we know it's not a penalty, we've seen it back, he's dived a second after.

"I spoke to the assessor at half-time and he said 'even I don't think it's a pen'.

"But then I speak to the head of referees and he thinks the refereeing in this league's exceptional. I just don't get it.

"At half-time I just said 'calm down, relax, there's loads of chances in this'.

"When I watched Aldershot on Saturday they'd gone after 60 minutes so I knew we'd get chances and we knew we'd get back in it.

"When you've got a goalscorer in form then, that's why we brought Jake Hyde to the club, to score us important goals at the important times.

"It took Belly a little bit of time to get going today.

"I played lads who I thought could compete with the physical battle today. I thought I got the boys to compete physically and then I could release my technical, quick boys in Jack Earing, in Gevaro Nepomuceno.

"What's really pleasing over the last week is my subs are having an impact, and raising the levels up. That's as pleasing as anything tonight.

"And I've got the back three who are good, honest lads who've competed in the air tonight.

"It wasn't pretty but what it was tonight was a true test of character and shows this group's got bags and bags of character."

Wild praised the stamina of his side in the third game of a gruelling mini run of fixtures,

"If we'd got a point tonight I think that would've been a good result," he said.

"The lads deserve immense credit and I hope the supporters see that.

"We've had three games in six days and three trips to London in ten days, that's hard.

"I'm knackered so that lot must be knackered.

"That's tough on any team, and to put in the displays and roll their sleeves up and dig deep at half-time tonight, I think shows what this group's all about."

When asked if it was a good sign that his team had won without playing particularly well, the Town boss said: "Yeah massively, it shows we can win ugly, it shows that we've got good character, it shows we never give up, it shows we run all over teams.

"One thing you've seen in the last six days is how fit are our lads. Our lads are fit and strong, and mentally strong.

"Yes we've played well in two out of the three games but the big, big thing in the last six days is how fit, how strong and how mentally strong we are."

Despite nine points from a possible last nine, Wild is remaining calm and refusing to be too excited.

"I don't get carried away," he said. "There's 30-odd games to go yet.

"All I'm bothered about is Solihull next Tuesday night and making sure we give a good account of ourselves.

"The lads have got back on track, they're playing how we thought they'd play and it's important we're confident but remain humble.

"There'll be peaks and troughs again, it's not just going to go all our way all season. There'll be bumps in the road at points and it's important that we maintain our levels.

"The lads are buzzing but they know we've got to keep the hard work going, and the hard work continues all across Christmas to make sure that we're not a flash in the pan."

Hyde now has four goals for the season after his brace in the win.

"Obviously he had the bad back and was injured across pre-season, he's at a new club and it takes time, and he's been used to playing one up-front at Woking, he comes here and he's playing in a two," Wild said.

"There's all those things, but game-by-game-by-game he's getting better and better.

"Put the kid in-front of goal and you know you've got a chance, and I'm pleased for him, I'm pleased he's repaying the faith that we put in him in the summer."
