Aldershot v FC Halifax Town: We'll give it our best shot, says Hughes

The Shots are 19th in the table but have gained 13 of their 14 points this season at home, with only Fylde, Solihull and Salford winning more home games in the National League.

And Hughes knows Town will need to be well prepared for their long journey south.

“I think they’ve only been beaten twice at home, they’ve got a strong record at home,” Hughes said.

“It’s going to be a difficult game for us. It’s one of those where we’re going to have to be organised, well-drilled as we always are, and see what we get when we get down there.

“In our last away games, barring Maidenhead, we’ve been well organised, looked strong at the back, been hard to break down, and I think we’ll be looking to hit people on the break.”

When asked if Town could do with a win after going seven matches without one, albeit including draws against top-seven sides Leyton Orient, Wrexham, Sutton and Fylde, Hughes said: “I think when you’re going away from home, it’s important not to get beat.

“Obviously if you get into the game and you’re in a strong position, we’ll be looking to win. That’s always the manager’s philosophy.

“If we can pick up a win obviously that’s going to keep everybody happy.”

Hughes confirmed defenders Michael Duckworth and Joe Skarz were both back in training, but that their possible inclusion tomorrow would be a decision for boss Jamie Fullarton.

Town will again be without captain Matty Brown and influential winger Matty Kosylo, who remain suspended.

“Obviously we’ve got people who have stepped in down at Bromey and who’ve done well, and we’ve got other players in the squad we can utilise who are more than capable of stepping in,” Hughes said.

Hughes is delighted with Town start to the season, with The Shaymen 10th in the National League.

“I think we’ve done fantastically well,” he said. “We started great.

“We’ve managed to record some good draws in amongst that as well.

“Obviously if half of those draws become wins then we’re in a very high position in the league.

“We’re very happy with where we are.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, and we intend doing that. Hopefully we can keep in the top half of the table.”

But despite their good league position, Hughes feels there is more to come from the Town squad.

He added: “The manager’s brought in some good players, and there’s a lot of potential there.

“Although the players are doing reasonably well, there is some more improvement left in them, and that’s what we’ll be trying to do in the not too distant future.”
