Brighouse Town 2 Radcliffe Borough 1

Brighouse Town had a dream start to their Evo Stik Northern Premier League campaign as they landed an opening day win against Lancashire outfit Radcliffe Borough.

Brighouse started strongly, and after they had twice tested the Radcliffe ‘keeper inside the first 10 minutes, striker Tom Matthews steamed through and rounded three Borough defenders to put the ball past Christopher Cheetham.

Matthews and Ryan Hall went close before the latter swung the ball high across goal from the right and full back Adam Field was at the far post to make it 2-0 at the break.

Radcliffe put pressure on Town in the early stages of the second period, but it wasn’t until the 80th minute that ‘keeper Jacob Giles had to make two quick successive saves. A Sam Grimshaw free kick also rattled the crossbar

Town almost went three up when a cross from Jagger got trapped under Jason Price’s boot six yards out and the opportunity was gone.

The game was in added time when Town conceded; Thomas Hulme was brought down just inside the box and Chris Mason stepped up to put the ball past Giles.
