Dunne record next in Jamie’s firing line

The 28-year-old Leicester City striker yesterday became the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League matches.

Vardy netted in the first half of his side’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United yesterday, eclipsing the record of Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy set across two seasons in 2003.

Vardy now needs to score in his next two games to equal the all-time record of consecutive goals scored at the top level of English football, set by Jimmy Dunne in 1931-32.

Dunne scored 12 goals in succession playing for Sheffield United.

Stan Mortensen had a 15-match scoring run for Blackpool in the 1950-51 campaign but it was not in back-to-back games due to injury.

Vardy, who scored 29 goals in 41 appearance for the Shaymen in 2010–2011 before being sold to Fleetwood, is the league’s top scorer with 14 goals this season.

van Nistelrooy was among the first to congratulate Vardy. He took to Twitter to say well done. “You’re number one now and you deserved it.”

Vardy said he had tried to shut the record bid out of his mind in an attempt to stop it affecting his performance.

“That’s the last thing I wanted it to do,” he said.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri said Vardy’s record was “an incredible achievement”.
