FC Halifax Town 1-2 Southport: "They took their chances, we didn't" says Wild after FA Trophy defeat

FC Halifax Town boss Pete Wild says his team's wasteful finishing cost them a place in the FA Trophy after they were knocked out 2-1 by Southport at The Shay.

"If you don't take your chances, you don't win football matches," Wild said.

"We've had 12 decent opportunities at goal, we've had 20 opportunities all in, and scored one.

"That's why we've got beat. They took their chances and they come away with a 2-1 win.

"You can have as much of the ball as you want, but if you don't take your chances, clear cut chances by the way, then you don't win the football match.

"I just thought we were passive, weak with the ball and weak without the ball, and that's why we got beat."

Wild added: "I thought first-half we didn't get after them enough, we didn't put them under enough pressure, first 20-25 minutes we let them bring the ball down and cause us problems, and that's how they scored.

"We let people run off the back of us and not do the simple things well out of possession, and then in possession we weren't ruthless enough.

"That's why we got beat.

"We can set them up as coaches to play how we want to play, but if they then don't go out and put the ball in the back of the net, then there's not a lot we can do about that.

"We've had chance after chance after chance after chance and not taken our chances tonight. That's why we've been beat."

When asked what can be done about Town's lack of a clinical touch in-front of goal, Wild said: "We've just got to keep working hard on putting our chances away.

"They're not half-chances, they're absolute clear cut chances and they haven't taken them. That's frustrating and we've all got to take responsibility for that."

Wild said The Shaymen could have been 5-0 ahead at half-time, and nobody would have argued.

"Did we play well enough to win? No, because we didn't take our chances," he said.

"So we got what we deserved, they took their chances, we didn't.

"If we take our chances, we come away from here and people say 'oh, 7-2, what a game that was' but we haven't took our chances and we've been beat 2-1 because of it.

"We had full control of the football match from start to finish, full control, and then it's just not gone our way.

"That's not an excuse, that's football, that's life.

"We know it's glaringly obvious what the problem was tonight and we need to rectify that for Saturday."
