FC Halifax Town 2-1 Boreham Wood: Fullarton praises captain's role in win

Brown produced a superb individual display, capped by his towering first-half header, as Halifax moved onto 50 points in the National League - and nine points clear of the bottom four.

“Since I’ve been in the building Matty’s personified what we’re asking of each individual,” Fullarton said.

“I don’t like singling out any player because I thought every player to a man showed they’ve had a response to what we’re asking, an intent in attitude and application which has culminated in a performance that was gritty at times, but I thought we coped very well.

“Matty was one of those, against Boreham Wood’s attacking prowess, that gave us that stability, the foundation and the platform to go on and win the game.”

Fullarton was also impressed by fellow goalscorer Mike Fondop-Talom’s winner.

“An excellent finish,” was how Fullarton described his goal. “And he had two chances in the first-half.

“When we worry is when we’re not creating those chances, or he’s not in the position to take them.

“Great credit to him, his chance for the goal was probably similar to the one he had late on against Solihull, his finish was excellent.”

Fullarton thought his side showed good character in the game, saying: “We could have been 2-0 up in the first 10 minutes. You’re looking for character and resilience when you don’t score when you’re on top.

“I thought we were well worthy of going in at half-time in the lead, and there’s always that worry when the opposition have a spell where they have chances, which happened in the first 10 minutes of the second-half.

“Great credit to the players because they responded well to that and came out on top.”

Fullarton insists he retained belief his side could go on and win during Boreham Wood’s dominance at the start of the second-half, during which they equalised through Morgan Ferrier.

“I think while every team at some point in a game has a spell when they’re on top, I thought we had that in the first-half,” Fullarton said.

“When they had that spell of 15, 20 minutes at the beginning of the second-half, although they were territorially on top and physically they were imposing themselves upon us, and even though it went 1-1, I thought they were never in total control.

“I thought if we stayed in the game and weathered the storm like we did, then we could go and win the game.

“Over the 41 games is far they’ve been the third best team in the league with the best away record, so for us to beat them reflects how the players are responding and their resilience.

“That resilience and determination, they’ve got to bring that, and at every game, at different stages, they’ve shown that.”

On Town’s chances of safety having extended their cushion to nine points between them and the drop zone, with five games remaining, Fullarton said: “I must be naive because I seem to be the only person that doesn’t look at that, and looks at what we do.

“We’ve got five games left and our aim’s 15 points. I’ve said from day one that we’re looking to go win every game we play in.

“Sometimes it doesn’t pan out that way but we have that intent.

“I don’t think there’s any more or less pressure or there’s any relief because they’ve responded well to my intensity and the demands I make on the training field, so they’ll appreciate it’s going to be like that until the end of April.”
