Spence left Boro to take up a trial at National League side FC Halifax Town, and boss Pete Wild is set to sign the former Middlesbrough man before loaning him back to Athletic.

Boro boss Darren Kelly, who was briefly in charge of Halifax Town back in 2015, is thrilled to have Spence back in his ranks.

"I'm over the moon to have Kian back, he's a great lad and a good asset for us too," said Kelly.

"Kian obviously wants to play at the highest possible level, which led to him leaving us to go on trial with Halifax.

"I know Pete Wild well, he was involved with the academy when I was manager at Oldham, and he phoned me to see if Kian could come back to us.

"It's a great move all round as Pete rates Kian as one for the future and he can come back to us and help us out, especially at the moment as we have a lot of injuries and unavailability."

Spence's registration has remained with Boro, so he goes straight into the squad for tonight's trip to big spending Buxton, before the Shaymen will sign him and loan him back to Athletic.
