FC Halifax Town: I didn't need persuading to stay at Halifax, says Wroe

The midfielder signed a deal until the end of the season last week after being released by Notts County.

Wroe has become an integral part of the Town side that has remained unbeaten under Jim Harvey - winning seven games and drawing three.

It’s all a far cry from Wroe’s debut at Grimsby when Town were thrashed 7-0, but the 30-year-old feels a different player to the one who joined the club back in October.

“Fitness-wise those first few weeks were difficult,” Wroe reflected.

“Results weren’t going well and fitness-wise I didn’t feel on top of my game.

“But I’m feeling a lot better now, I’m more match-fit, I’m stronger and I think you’ve probably seen that in my performances.

“I’m getting round the pitch a lot more and me and Kingsley especially in central midfield have been a good partnership.

“The first time I saw him after I signed he said he was very happy I was staying.

“I was in conversation with him and Jordan (Burrow) last week and they were both trying to twist my arm, but it didn’t need too much twisting, although it was nice for them to be saying they wanted me to stay.”

Wroe delighted Halifax fans by choosing to remain at The Shay rather than join high-flying Macclesfield, who Town beat 1-0 in Wroe’s last game for Halifax.

“It was my decision,” he said. “I’d heard about the interest from Macclesfield but I’d have preferred for it to be tied down weeks ago so I knew what I was doing.

“But I’m just happy for it to be all sorted and I can concentrate on helping the team maintain this good run until the end of the season.

“We beat them the other week and you’d never have guessed our league positions from that game.

“This place has been buzzing in the last few weeks because we don’t look like a team that’s in relegation trouble.

“Hopefully we can prove that and kick on for the rest of the season.”

Wroe’s absence against Barrow on Tuesday meant Harvey was forced to change his team for the first time in four games, but the midfielder feels the quality in the squad at The Shay means nobody’s place is certain.

“There’s been a bit of a change in personnel (since Harvey’s appointment) but hardly a massive overhaul,” said Wroe.

“The lads have found some confidence and we’ve had a settled side for the last few weeks.

“There’s some real competition for places, the lads on the bench are really challenging.

“You can see the lads are confident, they’re playing better and training is a lot sharper, which comes with that added spice that if you don’t perform in training and games you know somebody else is there knocking on the door to take your shirt.”

Wroe admits Halifax’s superb run of form under Harvey has brought a buzz back to the Town squad.

“It’s a lot more bubbly now than it was and the lads are getting on well,” said the Halifax skipper.

“That comes as you progress through the season and you get to know each other better.

“I don’t know how many new faces there were this summer, but certainly a fair few, so it’s always difficult for a side to settle down.

“I think we’ve proved that - we’re more settled now and it’s going really well.”

Wroe is keen to see The Shaymen put some distance between themselves and the bottom four, but believes their ambitions this season shouldn’t necessarily end there.

He added: “We’ve got to look to keep picking points up in the short-term, although you’re always looking to do that.

“These next few weeks are important to get a gap on that relegation zone and I think the lads will become even more confident and you’ll see us keep improving and progressing.

“You never know, you’ve seen Southport shooting up the league with a string of good results.

“We’ve shot up from probably being written off a couple of months ago, so we’ll see how high we can climb.”
