FC Halifax Town: I thought it was all over, says Harvey after dramatic win

Town boss Jim Harvey admitted he thought it was all over before Connor Hughes' dramatic last-ditch winner sealed a 3-2 win over Boreham Wood.

Town squandered a two-goal lead and appeared to be heading for a disappointing draw until Hughes scored with almost the last kick of the game.

The win has now put Halifax two points clear of relegation zone with two games in hand.

Harvey, who said he would have settled for a draw with 10 minutes to go, enthused: “Connor has got that ability to score.

“Some people have a knack and he does pop up with goals.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that he’s got that.

“It’s always nice to have that type of player come on because you know the potential is there for them to pinch something.

“I was just waiting for the final whistle. I thought the game was all over and I wasn’t expecting that. I couldn’t believe it when it went in, it’s absolutely brilliant.”

Town were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Jordan Burrow and James Bolton, and Harvey was delighted with his side’s display before the away side fought back.

“It was probably the best 45 minutes in the first-half since I’ve been in charge,” said the Town boss.

“Then there were visions of what we were like when I first came, I thought some of the defending was really poor.

“You’ve got to give them credit, they came out in the second-half and changed the game, started to play and structured their attacks.

“They made us work a bit and we were poor at that, we didn’t know how to defend it.

“Individually we didn’t do our jobs, we didn’t get tight enough and they worked their way back into the game.

“The first goal makes everybody nervous and the second goal then maybe gave us an injection we needed to get forward.”

Harvey was pleased to see Burrow notch his first league goal since November, but felt his side should have scored more than twice when they were on top.

“That’ll do him good,” Harvey said. “Forwards always love to score.

“Although we got two in the first-half it could have been three or four.

“I said to Tommy (Miller) towards half-time that ‘we’ve put too much effort in and we haven’t got enough of a return for it’.

“We could have been out of sight. Two-nil is always a dodgy scoreline and I was concerned we’d run out of steam a bit in the second-half.

The Town boss praised the character of his team for going the distance, and was also happy with the part the home supporters played on the night.

He added: “This team will go all the way for you and that’s what they’ve done again with the last kick of the ball virtually.

“It’s a brilliant feeling when you get that.

“I thought the supporters, in the first-half especially, were brilliant.

“They responded to the performance and to hear that noise and support was excellent.”
