Halifax produced another encouraging display against Football League opposition after their 2-1 loss to Championship side Bolton on Saturday.

Niall Maher and a trialist striker scored for Town either side of Vale’s three, by Tom Pope and two from David Worrall.

“It’s another step towards the first game of the season,” Fullarton said after the game.

“There was an improvement in continuity, understanding. Whilst we don’t stress the importance of lack of importance of winning games in pre-season, it’s important that you look as if you can score goals to win games, which I think we showed.

“We do go out to win every game. You have to put it in context of where we’re at, the fact we’re playing a team in a higher division.

“We have to take aspects we didn’t do so well and learn from them so it doesn’t undo us for three points come when the league starts.”

Fullarton warned there was still work to be done before the big kick-off at Braintree on August 4 though.

“There’s a lot of stuff we did that showed they’ve taken on board things from Saturday and they’ve taken another step towards where we want to be,” he said.

“They’re not there yet, by any stretch of the imagination. There are areas we will work on to improve on so that we can do them better, which will give us a better chance of winning games come the start of the season.”

When asked which areas he wants his side to improve in, he replied: “All areas we can improve on. We created a reasonable amount of chances.

“We’re still finding our legs at the moment, but it’s pre-season, and it’s another step in the right direction.

“But we’re still looking to improve every aspect, and that includes score more goals and concede less.

“I think the principles are the same in any game. You’re still looking to score more goals and concede less.

“Just because it’s pre-season let’s not look at it as if it’s not important. It is important because we’re working on our principles.

“You never like to lose goals, and whatever goal you lose, when you’re pragmatic, there are always ways to prevent it or things you should do better, so I’ll have a look at that and be able to dissect it to go and work on it in preparation for Saturday’s game.”
