FC Halifax Town: Sellers feeling the benefits of full-time football

The defender joined Town from National League South side Wealdstone this summer, and has made eight appearances for The Shaymen so far this season.

Sellers, who marks his 24th birthday tomorrow, had only played 15 games as a professional during a season at Wycombe before coming to Halifax, but already feels he has improved as a player since signing for Town.

“Definitely. I knew that would happen working under the boss, which is why I was so keen to move up here, because I knew my game would improve,” he said.

“My tactical understanding has improved a lot, in terms of understanding the game, understanding of my position, what is demanded of me on the ball and off the ball, what’s demanded of me as a defender. There’s lots that go into it.

“I feel my technical ability has got a lot better since I went full-time too, some may disagree!

“I feel a lot more comfortable and a lot more confident on the ball, and that’s what comes with full-time training and playing under a good manager.”

Does Sellers feel comfortable at National League level?

“Yeah I do, it’s a good level, you’ve got really good players around you,” he said, “experienced players that have played at a good level, so it’s nice to play with them.

“I had a lot of family issues around the time of me leaving Wycombe, there was a lot going on in my personal life that I needed some time to sort out what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be.

“So I needed to take some time out but then I found that hunger again.”

Town are mid-table after 15 games, having won five, drawn five and lost five.

“If you think about the games we’ve played and the teams we’ve played, yes we could have had better outcomes in certain situations, but we’ve played some really good teams and come away with some very good and valuable points, that hopefully will be recognised come the end of the season,” said Sellers, who missed some matches with a niggling groin strain.

“When you go away to the likes of Sutton and Wrexham, and away to Salford, it is different.

“It’s good to come away with points from those places. To sit where we are, I think we’ve got a lot more to give than where we’re sitting and what we’re showing right now.

“But I think that’s down to the games we’ve played and the run we’ve had.

“We get pushed every single day, and we want to be the best we can be.

“There’s definitely more to come. There’s more goals in us, and there’s a lot more things we can do as a team to tighten up.”

When asked what Town could achieve this season, Sellers said: “It’s a tough league this year. Hopefully we’ll be in and around the play-offs, which would be nice.

“I think we’ve got the ability to do that, but we’ll have to see what happens.”
