FC Halifax Town: Shaq hands it to goalkeeping coach after crucial winner

The on-loan striker bagged the crucial winner last Saturday, which means Town will guarantee their safety with a win on the last day of the season.

McDonald came off the bench in the first-half at Forest Green before finding the net in the 70th minute with a close-range shot.

He said: “At half-time I was walking back out and Karl said ‘have you seen this?’

“He said ‘it’s my lucky hand lotion’ so I said I’d try some because we needed some luck.

“I put it on my hands and I scored so when I went to the fans I was doing the hand washing celebration.

“It was such a big three points so it was such a great moment for me to score the winner.

“It’s definitely one of the best feelings I’ve had in football.

“I was tempted to jump into the crowd but I had to hold myself back.

“The referee said to me after my celebration ‘thanks for not jumping into the crowd’.

“I just had to give a fist pump to them and say thank you for coming to support us.

“I had a chance like that at Kidderminster and I missed it, so I knew if I got a chance like that again I had to put that right.”

McDonald was confident The Shaymen would get their much-needed win at Forest Green, and was determined to find the net again in the game after nine matches without a goal.

“I told the lads in training beforehand that I’d been on a bit of a goal drought and I needed to put that right,” he said.

“The lads have stayed positive throughout it all and it’s been great in the changing room - there’s still been so much positivity and belief.

“Coming to Forest Green, I knew we wouldn’t be pushovers.

“With them being second in the league, we knew it would be very difficult but I knew that if we stayed together as a team and fought, we could get a result.”

The 20-year-old believes Town will finish the job against Macclesfield on Saturday to secure their safety.

He added: “Hopefully we can just do exactly what we did last Saturday.

“We’ve played really well in the last couple of games.

“I don’t think we’ll throw it away now. The lads have got the belief and the fight.

“As a team we won’t let that happen. Hopefully we’ll pull through and get that result we need.

“There will be nerves, but being nervous is good.

“If you’re nervous it shows you’re ready for the game.

“There will be a bit of tension because it’s the last game of the season and we need the win.”
