FC Halifax Town: Staunton delighted to mark comeback with a goal

The 23-year-old made a scoring return to the Halifax side as a substitute in their 2-2 draw at Bromley on Saturday.

That was after nearly seven weeks out with an ankle ligament injury sustained in the 2-0 win over Barrow on August 7.

“When I first got the injury, it felt horrendous, so I thought it was a bad one,” he added.

“I didn’t expect to be out for so long, but the swelling just wouldn’t go down.”

An injury to fellow centre-half Niall Maher during the first-half on Saturday saw Staunton take his place, but did he expect to be back in action so soon?

“Up until about two weeks ago, no,” Staunton said. “I was still really struggling. But then I had a really good week in terms of recovery, doing loads in the pool, and it knocked me forward probably a week or so more than I thought I would be.”

On his goal at Bromley, Staunton said: “Yeah it was nice wasn’t it! I’ll take that!

“It was definitely a nice way to be back and finally contribute something!”

Staunton felt Town earned their draw last Saturday, with Jordan Preston popping up with an added time equaliser.

“I think if we’d have gone home with nothing it would have been a harsh reflection on the way we played,” Staunton said.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t get three in all honesty, but coming away to Bromley, it’s nice to take a point, although you’re never happy with it, after the way the game went.

“Going behind twice, we showed a bit of character to come back, so we’ll take the positives and go again on Saturday.”
