Ryan Lennon’s first-half penalty proved decisive on a rainy night as he picked himself up having been fouled by Town’s Jay Benn to score from 12 yards.
Sunderland deservedly led at half-time, having had the better of the chances,
Town rallied as the game went on, but were unable to claw their way back into the game.
