Neil Aspin was pleased new signing Adam Smith got off the mark with two goals in FC Halifax Town’s 5-0 win at Brighouse Town.
Smith came on as a substitute at half-time to bag a brace, while fellow new recruit Simon Ainge also got on the scoresheet along with Alex Johnson and Matt Pearson.
Aspin said: “It doesn’t matter what game you play in, it’s nice if you can get a goal and get off the mark. I’m probably more pleased for Adam with him being a forward and for his confidence. They were two good finishes and that’ll be great for him.
“It’s nice for centre-halves and defenders to chip in with goals but I’m particularly pleased for Adam.”
Ainge’s opening goal came from a Town corner, and the Town boss is encouraged by his side’s greater threat from dead ball situations, with Marc Roberts also scoring from two corners against Scarborough on Saturday.
He said: “We do look more of a threat from set-pieces there’s no doubt about that.
“It is a part of the game that’s important and we all know we never looked like scoring from set-pieces last season so it is something we want to change.
“You might find chances don’t come as thick and fast as they did last season and when you get a set-piece it gives you a chance to put the ball in the box and we look a lot more capable now of getting some goals.”
Triallists Reece Hands and Adam Priestley were also given 45 minute run-outs, and Aspin said both will be given another chance to impress.
“We’re in a position in pre-season where you can always look at players and they did enough to be looked at again.”
The Town chief was also impressed with Brighouse, and said they provided his team with a good work-out.
He added: “I was impressed with Brighouse, I thought they did really well and they’ve improved since I’ve been at Halifax over the years.
“They’ve got a better team together, they’ve got more pace in the team and the lads who represent them are in better shape than they were a few years ago and I thought they were a credit to their club and it was a really good work-out for us.”
