Town manager Neil Aspin says he wasn’t suprised by Town’s 3-1 win against Blackburn Rovers.
The Shaymen beat a Rovers reserve Xi thanks to goals from Lee Gregory, Danny Lowe and Dale Johnson.
Town dominated the first half and while Rovers pulled one back in the second, Aspin said he was pleased with the performance.
“There were some pleasing aspects,” he said.
“I think we’ve got some work to do but I think overall for 90 minutes it was a good workout.
“I expected to win the game. We’ve got a strong team and it wasn’t a suprise to me that we won.
“Winning any game gives you confidence and it’s a good habbit to be in but it means nothing in pre-season.
“It’s all about that first game of the season, which is a difficult game for us, and you want to be going into that with as many match fit and ready for the game as possible.”
Aspin employed three centre-backs and wing-backs for 70 minutes against Rovers - the first time he has used the system in pre-season.
“The fact they didn’t threaten in the first half meant it worked well defensively,” Aspin said of the formation.
“It’s just whether it gives us enough impetus going forward - but I have to look at different formations and pre-season is the time to do that.
“You want to get the season started and get into the games but pre-season is enjoyable if the players have the right attitude and do what you tell them.
“You need a bit of luck because you don’t want to pick any injuries, particularly in these remaining two games.”
Town host a Bolton Wanderers Xi on Wednesday night at the Shay (7.45pm) before their final game at North Ferriby on Saturday (3pm).
