FC Halifax Town’s under 19’s will play Sunderland at home in the first round of the FA Youth Cup after beating Litherland REMYCA 5-0 at The Shay on Wednesday night.
Town reached the second round of the competition two years ago when they lost 5-1 to Sheffield United.
Goals from Gary da Costa, a brace from Matthew Rowson and two own goals saw Halifax progress to the first round proper this season.
Da Costa opened the scoring after 14 minutes after racing through on goal and finishing at the second attempt when his first shot was saved.
The second goal came when a cross by Halifax’s Jay Benn was turned into his own net by a Litherland player.
Centre-back Tosin Abioue’s cross was also sent into the net by a visiting player for Town’s third after the interval before Rowson came off the bench to fire in a loose ball inside the penalty area and then finish off a through ball by Jean-Jacques Kirongozi.
