Former FC Halifax Town striker Jamie Vardy said it was a dream come true to make his England debut in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against the Republic of Ireland.
Vardy replaced England captain Rooney in the second-half of the friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
“I’m obviously over the moon. It literally is what dreams are made of,” Vardy told TheFA.com.
“Coming on for Wayne as well, I just thought I’d go out there, enjoy myself and try to show what I can do.
“I had a little chat with the gaffer beforehand – it was literally just do what I’ve been doing at club level and bring it on to the field to try and get the victory that we wanted.
“It was a strange game but it still keeps us unbeaten since the World Cup.”
