Holders Carrington through to quarter-finals of Briggs Priestley Senior Cup

Carrington will now play Beehive and Crosskeys in the quarter-final after goals from Damian Randall and Josh Hiley.

The first goal came from Randall with a powerful strike from the edge of the box that the keeper got a hand to but was unable to keep out.

Carrington doubled their lead before the break when Hiley broke onto a loose ball in the box, rounded the keeper and finished into the empty net.

Manager Dan Mullaney felt his team were never under any serious threat in the game.

He said: “Oddfellows defended well but we missed quite a lot of chances.

“We hit the post a couple of times and there were a couple of times we had a mostly open-goal and missed.

“We were always quite comfortable as we scored both goals before half-time.

“The aim is to win the competition again. We want to defend it if we can.

“We’re doing pretty well in the league. We’ve got quite a lot of injuries at the moment so it was difficult getting a side out on Sunday.

“We didn’t have any substitutes at the weekend but hopefully we’ll get some players back in the next two or three weeks.”

Waiters Arms powered into the quarter-finals of the Senior Cup thanks to a comprehensive 6-1 victory over a spirited North Bridge side.

Waiters started brightly despite missing their top scorers David Chappell and Billy Grogan and created numerous opportunities which Harry Talbot missed.

Lee Wood eventually broke the deadlock with a screamer from 25 yards after good interplay with Reece Uttley.

Talbot doubled the lead from a Colin Maguire cross and Wood made it 3-0 just before the break after being played in by Ashton Richardson.

A James Goodwin own goal narrowed the gap but Richardson scored with a fine solo effort and made it 5-1 with a smart finish from just inside the box.

Returning winger Dean Park completed the scoring in the last minute after a perfect cross from Wood found him at the back post.

The sad news of local football legend Dave Ellis’ passing casted a sombre mood across that match and the other three games played in the Briggs Priestley Senior Cup.

Old Pond, on a five game unbeaten run, also succumbed to Premier Division opposition at the first hurdle against Feathers FC at Lane Head.

Jason Kirby was on fine form in the Old Pond goal and thwarted a lively Feathers attacking line on a number of occasions before eventually conceding to a breakaway goal.

Corey Henderson and Nathan Howard were excellent up front for Feathers as the visitors doubled their advantage just after the half hour mark.

Pond were dogged in defence with Michael Barlow dangerous when breaking from midfield; with usual keeper Dan Barnes putting in a sterling effort up front as cover for illness and injury. Paul Taylor had a great opportunity to grab a goal back on half time, but Christian Silkstone made a fine save from his close range effort.

Pond continued to probe, but the higher-division quality told late on as Feathers went on to secure a 5-0 victory and progression to the second phase. Henderson and Howard grabbed a brace apiece, with Liam Senior also finding the net.

Barge FC were hoping to face the winners of the tie, but were also eliminated on penalty kicks after a ding-dong battle with Division One Ryburn United. The two sides traded a dozen goals before the drama of spot kicks saw Matthew Bagshaw’s side knocked out 6-5 on penalties.

Top Club were unable to raise a side for their match with Halifax Hammers, meaning that Brighouse lost all four of its sides at the first hurdle in the Senior Cup.

Premier Division side Queens Head overcame Mount Tabor 4-2.

But there was an upset as First Division side Ryburn Valley beat Premier Division team Hollins Holme 4-3.

Beehive and Crosskeys also progressed on penalties after drawing 2-2 at home to Lee Mount.
