Illingworth’s chance of second upset

Illingworth St Mary’s will have high hopes of beating another higher-ranked side after last night’s draw for the second round of the Halifax FA Albert Crabtree Cup.

Saints, one of the new clubs in the Halifax AFL this season, have been drawn at home to Stainland United on Saturday, November 15.

Their Division One opponents continued their poor start to the season with a 4-0 home defeat to Midgley United Reserves in the league at the weekend and do not appear to be as strong as the Greetland side from the Premier that Illingworth beat 2-0 in the first round.

Holders Ovenden West Riding overcame a tricky hurdle away to AFL champions Ryburn United three days ago and will be happy with a home draw against Halifax League first division side Volunteer Arms.

Matthew Jones twice gave Ovenden the lead on Saturday, Jamie Milne and Owen Wilkinson hauling Ryburn level.

Jay Carney scored a late winner for the below-par visitors, who were grateful to stand-in keeper Gary Allchin for a first half penalty save.

Halifax AFL leaders Stump Cross, impressive winners against Halifax Irish Club at the start of their trophy bid, will host another team from a regional league, Elland side Huddersfield Amateurs from the Yorkshire Amateur League.
