KAY TO RESCUE FOR BOROUGH

Borough were behind on four occasions in a Division Two match which was exciting for a swollen crowd, on a day when Burnley were without a game, but not one which home boss John Gilford enjoyed.

“It was a perfectly good, close encounter for most people but as far as I was concerned nobody did a job for us,” he said.

Borough ended their goal famine but a previously tight defence conceded three sloppy goals against a team below Borough in the table.

Gilford believes the Cumbrians are better than their lowly position suggests.

Both of their main strikers have been injured but one, Jordan Brough, made his return on Saturday and bagged a hat-trick.

Tod made a bright start, only to fall behind to an excellent move from the visitors on the break.

Dave Patrick quickly made it 1-1 when Island failed to clear a corner but the visitors regained the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half.

It stayed that way until early in the second half when Marco Romaro turned the ball home, only for Island to scramble their third from a cross into the six yard box.

Gilford made changes, pushing Terry Lowe up front and sending on Jim Hardman, who not only got a grip on midfield but made it 3-3 with a lovely 18-yard strike.

The visitors looked to have won it when their centre half was allowed to run through and score with four minutes left but Kay made it 4-4 from skipper Danny Walsh’s free kick swung over from the right.

Borough travel to next-to-bottom Stoneclough on Saturday looking to beat a side who have dropped through the divisions after a spell in the Premier.

It is likely to be Patrick’s last game before he heads off to Australia.

Dean Farry is still injured but Gilford is pleased with the performances of Lowe and Jack Dungworth, who have come into the side recently.
