Late goals give Stump victory

Stump Cross cut Ryburn United’s lead at the top of the Haslem Sheppard Halifax AFL to three points with a 3-1 home win over Shelf United last night.

Tony Kniveton’s men, who have three games left to champions Ryburn’s two and a superior goal difference, cut it fine at Shroggs Park with two goals in the last 10 minutes.

Damian Watkins gave Stump the lead after half an hour with a free header but Shelf levelled with a fine individual effort from Hayden Finch.

The second half belonged to Stump but they could not break down a dogged Shelf defence until an own goal entering the closing stages.

A Tom Robinson strike two minutes from time sealed victory.

Mixenden United are close to clinching a place in the Premier Division next season after a 4-0 win away to Elland Allstars.

Damian Randall scored twice and Paul Kemp and Matthew Horsfall were also on target for the visitors.

Michael Midgley’s scoring spree continued with two more for Denholme United at home to Ryburn United Reserves but the visitors emerged 4-3 winners.

Danny Moralee got Denholme’s other goal while Lewis Brearley (two), Richard Redhead and Rob Worthington struck for the visitors, who climbed to fifth.

Halifax Irish Centre moved out of the relegation positions with a precious point in a 2-2 home draw with Salem.

The scorers were Niall Cuttle and Craig Eastwood for Irish and Lee Worrall and Craig Skinner for Salem.

The only game in Division Two involved title favourites Illingworth St Mary’s.

They reduced Brighouse Sports’ lead to one point, with two games in hand, courtesy of a 6-0 home win over Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves.

Lee Cartwright got two of their goals. Joe Griffin, Jake Griffin, Dan Rosier and Nick Bell got the others.

Division Two side St Columbas received a triple points boost at the league meeting on Monday night.

Two teams were found to have played ineligible players against them - Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves in a 4-4 draw on February 28 and Sowerby United Reserves, who beat them 5-1 on March 14.

Saints also collected three points when Denholme United Reserves were unable to raise a team on March 28.

Premier side Northowram and Division One side Halifax Irish Centre were awarded the points from games against Elland United on March 30 and Volunteer Arms on March 21 respectively.

Elland and Volunteer had failed to fulfil the fixtures.

Ovenden West Riding Reserves overcame a second half revival by lowly Bradford AFC before clinching a 4—1 home victory in Division Two of the West Riding CA last night.

Scott Carney and Matty Waller gave West Riding a two-goal interval lead but Bradford, well led by Daniel Dixon, missed a string of chances and Ovenden ‘keeper Craig Turnbull made a couple of excellent stops.

Dixon fired Bradford back into the game from 18 yards on 70 minutes but West Riding raised their game and Carney and Waller took them clear.
