Football - Shelf Utd v Midgley Utd at West Vale. Callum Lewis for Shelf and Greg Spink for Midgley.

Two goals for Callum Lewis and one each for Josh Hans, Matthew Hartley and Sam Henderson helped the visitors get on top at Holmes Park, Luddenden Foot.

Shelf lost their hold on the Challenge Cup when going out on penalties to Greetland on Saturday.

They still have an outside chance of the title but have only just reached the half-way point in their league programme with another 10 games to play before the end of the month.

The win over Calder left them 19 points behind leaders Ryburn United from seven games fewer.

Last night’s other three scheduled games were in Division Two but only two of them went ahead with the match between Sowerby Bridge Reserves and St Columba’s postponed.

Leaders FC Plummet Line are closing in on the title after a 3-2 victory away to Greetland Reserves.

They went close on numerous occasions but it was still no surprise when Greetland took the lead following a mix-up in the Plummet defence and appeals that a hand had been used to force the ball in.

Plummet hit straight back when Josh Hunt fed the overlapping Luke Sharman, who rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

Hunt struck again after half time and 10 minutes later centre back Matthew Grady unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard shot over the keeper to give Plummet a 3-1 lead.

Greetland threw men forward and with five minutes left Jordan Winter was upended in the box and scored from the spot. The hosts then spurned two late chances to grab a draw.

Shelf United Reserves beat AFC Crossley’s Reserves 5-2 at Lightcliffe Academy with Josh Norcliffe notching a hat-trick.

Replacements Dan Abel and Robert Smith got the hosts’ other goals and Ben Casey and Sam Cole replied for the bottom-place Mason Green side.
