Midwood is Greetland hero

They beat holders Shelf FC 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw on a heavy pitch at Luddenden Foot and will face Sowerby Bridge in the battle for the silverware.

Greetland have a good record in this competition but their prospects looked bleak when they went 2-0 down to goals from Matty Hartley and Callum Lewis before losing keeper Kyle Hancock to a dislocated shoulder.

The experienced Midwood donned the gloves and was immediately called into action, tipping a looping shot over the bar.

Greetland started to rally and when Charlie Cliffe made an excellent run and his shot was saved, Jonny Crowther reacted quickest to reduce the deficit on the stoke of half time.

The introduction of Karl Jowett paved the way for the equaliser. He raced clear, cut inside the area and was brought down for a penalty converted by Tom Wall.

Play became end to end but Greetland finished the stronger with Jack Dighton having a shot deflected over from close range and the Ben Cole having an effort cleared off the line in the dying seconds.

Midwood saved two of Shelf’s first five penalties and converted his own. Matty Oldfield and Adam Worsick missed for Greetland to keep it at 3-3.

It then went to sudden death and Midwood made an excellent save before Oliver Bagley kept his cool to send Greetland through to the final.

There was better news for Shelf FC from Natty Lane, Illingworth where the reserves earned an Invitation Cup final meeting with Flying Dutchman.

They beat Sowerby Bridge Reserves 5-0 with two goals from Kyle Peel and others from James Grace, Jason Hanks and Will Parkin.

Ovenden West Riding are on the brink of winning the West Riding CA’s Division One title after a 5-3 win away to nearest challengers Salts Reserves.

They took the game to the hosts from the start through the industrious Matt Jones, Hayden Kerris and Glyn Beale.

John Booth gave them the lead on 15 minutes with a customary finish. Ten minutes later Beale found himself unmarked 12 yards out and his trusted left foot did the rest.

Salts’ Dan Sadowskji threatened on a couple of occasions but Lewis Scott was in competent form.

Graeme Sides and Booth struck five minutes apart early in the second half to put West Riding 4-0 up but Holly Wilson and Dom Lazenby pulled two goals back.

West Riding sprung back into life and Booth made it 2-5 before Sadowskj reduced the deficit from 10 yards, five minutes after having a spot kick brilliantly saved by Scott.
