Promotion blow for Brighouse

Brighouse Sports faltered in their promotion quest from Division One of the Haslem-Sheppard Halifax AFL last night.

Garry West’s side could only draw 1-1 away to lowly Calder ‘76 Reserves in their penultimate game.

It means that even if they win their final game at home to Sowerby Bridge on Saturday, they can still be collared by Denholme United in the battle for second spot behind champions Illingworth St Mary’s.

Denholme had a big fixture backlog, with Foster Park hard hit by the wet winter weather, and Elland Allstars were the latest team unable to raise a side to send there last night.

Sowerby United went second for the time being at least after Corey Henderson scored five goals as they beat Ryburn United Reserves 8-5 in their final fixture.

Division One: Calder 76 Res 1 (A.Brown) Brighouse Sports AFC 1 (J.O’Callaghan), Denholme United v Elland Allstars P (Allstars could not raise a team), Sowerby Bridge 3 (M.Bates 2 D.Maguire) Hx Irish Centre 0, Sowerby United 8 (C.Henderson 5 H.Walsh L.Barber C.McGow) Ryburn United Res 5 (A.Shaw 2 J.Lawton C.Jennings og).
