Saints on high after title success

Illingworth St Mary’s have crowned a superb first season in the Haslem Sheppard Halifax AFL by taking the Division Two title.

Saturday’s 2-0 win away to sole rivals Brighouse Sports had put them on the brink of success and they completed the job with a 3-0 win away to Crossleys Reserves last night.

Michael Gregory, Brandon Field and Gareth Gaukroger scored the goals which took them out of Brighouse’s reach.

Saints, who play their home matches on a 3G pitch at Trinity Academy, still have two matches to play.

Holmfield moved closer to the Division One crown with a 3-0 win away to Ryburn United Reserves.

Chris Woodhouse scored twice and Danny Kirman got the other.

The other promoted side, Mixenden United, also had a tricky-looking fixture at Sowerby Bridge and won 3-1 to keep the title race alive.

However, Holmfield can wrap things up with victory over Halifax Irish Centre on Saturday.

Ashley Bailey, Adam Gaze and Travis Allison scored for Mixenden with Jordan Bedford the Bridge scorer.

Calder are up to third in the Premier after goals from Steve Jones and Remi Allen gave them a 2-1 home win over Shelf United, for who Ashley Drake scored.

Warley Rangers stayed in good heart for the Challenge Cup final with a 3-0 win over a Northowram side they beat in the semi-finals of that competition.

Damon Nicholls-Gledhill gave them the lead towards the end of the first half.

Rams’ Alex O’Keefe had a penalty saved with 20 minutes left and Warley pulled clear through Chris Hall’s scrambled effort and Tom Hiley’s 85th minute snapshot.

Last night’s sixth AFL game resulted in a 3-0 home win for Denholme United Reserves against St Columbas in Division Two.

Denholme’s scorers were Guy Flanagan, Damien Allen and Lea Kelly.

Ovenden West Riding came away from Storthes Hall with a deserved 2-0 win in the Premier Division of the West Riding CA League last night.

Their much-changed line up was too good for Hall.

Hayden Kerris gave them the lead after 18 minutes and Matty Waller sealed the points on his first team debut with 10 to go.
