Two football games abandoned

The Halifax AFL season got back into full swing yesterday after a succession of soggy or icy Saturdays but goodwill was in short supply with two games abandoned.

The official in the Premier Division contest between Mixenden United and Midgley United at Natty Lane, Illingworth called a halt after 72 minutes, shortly after Midgley had gone 2-1 up.

The other abandonment came in Division One. Play was suspended after 33 minutes of the Ryburn United Reserves versus Sowerby United game at Ripponden, which was goalless at the time.

Mixenden have already been involved in one abandoned game this season, at Northowram, when one of their players allegedly assaulted the referee.

League fixture secretary David Rattigan confirmed that neither of yesterday’s games had been abandoned due to a physical assault on the official or player injury.

He said: “Until we receive reports from the match officials we cannot comment on any events.

“Both cases will be reported to the West Riding County FA and once they have dealt with them, the league management will then decide if any further action is to be taken.”
