Games medal eludes Tiler

The 15-year-old from Denholme, coached by Eddie Halstead at Mytholmroyd Community Centre, missed out on a medal in the women’s 69kg weightlifting.

Tiler, the European youth champion, finished fourth after failing to equal her clean and jerk personal best of 123kg.

She did manage 118kg as well as a 91kg lift in the snatch to post a combined tally of 209kg.

Cameroon’s Marie Fegue took gold with a combined 234kg. Nigerian Itohan Ebireguesele (222kg) took silver and Canadian Marie-Josee Ares-Pilon (214kg) the bronze.

Tiler insists she will only get stronger for her Glasgow 2014 experience.

The teenager said: “It was so close on the clean and jerk.

“I just couldn’t get the bar to stay up. But I will come back stronger for this. I nearly had it and I was screaming in my head yes, I’ve got it’.

“But all of a sudden my back went. I was trying to hang on but then I had to drop the bar.

“I just missed out on a medal by 5kg but I believe I can come back and win medals in the future.

“My dream is to be world and Olympic champion and I believe I can do that. I just need to keep working hard. I’m already preparing for Rio in two years. I just need to stay focused. Right now I feel stronger every day.

“There was a lot of pressure on me to get a medal but it didn’t bother me. I believed I could do it. I’m disappointed but I’m only 15, I’ve got plenty of time.”

There has already been one Calderdale-related success in Scotland with Todmorden-born Faith Pitman winning bronze in the under 69kg judo event.

The 29-year-old, who now lives in Harlow, beat Australia’s Katharina Haecker to earn a bronze medal.

She said it was the highlight of her career and that she now planned to retire.
