Marsh’s finishing flourish

Nick Marsh and Jamie Bower finished joint 18th in the Men’s Open Amateur Championships for the Brabazon Trophy at Seaton Carew yesterday.

The Halifax-Huddersfield Union pair finished on a four-round total of 290, which is two under par.

Marsh, the England squad member from Elland, saw his chance of glory disappear with a 76 on Friday but he bounced back well yesterday, shooting a 70.

The Huddersfield GC player went out in 32 but came back in par having bogeyed the 10th and 16th.

Meltham GC’s Bower shot 73 on Friday and 72 yesterday with five birdies and four bogeys.

The event was won by Rushmere GC’s Ben Stow who birdied the last two holes for a 66 and a 278 total, which left him one shot ahead of his England team-mates Ryan Evans and Ashley Chesters.

Sandy Lyle, Gordon Brand Jnr, Ronan Rafferty, Peter McEvoy, Peter Hanson from Sweden and Charl Schwartzel from South Africa are past winners of the event.
