Nick Marsh moves back into contention at Brabazon Trophy

English amateur champion Marsh had opened with a 75 at Notts (Hollinwell) but moved up the leaderboard immediately by birdieing his first three holes. He dropped shots at the 5th and 6th to lose some momentum, but closed the outward nine with a birdie 2 to be out in 34.

The value of two inward birdies was halved by a bogey, but the 20-year-old was pleased with his improved putting and his 144 total, although he said ruefully: “I still left a couple of shots out there.”

Walton Heath’s Ben Taylor leads by two on five under (69 70).

It puts him two ahead of the charging Scottish player, Ewen Ferguson, who shot five-under 67 in the second round and is tied on three under overall with England’s Jack Singh Brar and Paul Kinnear.

Lindrick’s Jonathan Thomson, just one off the overnight lead after a 70, fell back slightly with a 76 which included double bogeys at holes five and 12. He had two birdies on his card and an outward and inward nine of 38.

Alongside him is Bedale’s Daniel Brown who produced a second consecutive 73. He grabbed four birdies – three on the back nine - but also five bogeys.

Meltham’s Jamie Bower played solidly through 10 holes, every one a par, but lost his equilibrium following a double bogey at 11. Although he birdied 16 and 17, four other bogeys meant a back nine total of 40 as he tallied 149 for the two days.

Bawtry’s Ben Brewster is also on 149 (76 73) after a round which included two birdies on each of the nines, but also a triple bogey 7 at the seventh.

Howley Hall’s Ben Hutchinson bettered his first-round score by seven as he shot 73 for a 153 aggregate. He was out in level par after three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey, and on the way home found two more birdies but three more bogeys.

Lindrick’s Joe Dean went to the turn in three under and did not drop a shot until the 15th. However, he endured a triple bogey 8 at the 17th and a single at the last to record a 154-aggregate with rounds of 80 and 74.

Shipley’s William Whiteoak carved a dozen shots off his opening round to card a 71. He was out in 35 thanks in no small part to an eagle three at the sixth and was back in level par, after birdieing both 10 and 11, for a 154 total.

Tankersley Park’s Lewis Hollingworth had four bogeys on his card but no birdies and is on 155 (79 76).

One shot back of him is Pike Hills’ Martin Brown (76 80) who had six bogeys, a double bogey but also failed to hunt down a birdie.

Bondhay’s Daniel Wasteney had an outward nine of one-under 35, but was derailed by two triple bogeys - including one at the par-5 17th for the second consecutive day.

Lindrick’s Nathan Fell had two birdies but a rash of bogeys in a second consecutive 80. Eight shots went in 10 holes from the 4th, including a triple bogey 7 at the 11th hole.
