Yorkshire Inter District Union: Teesside 12 Halifax-Huddersfield 24

HALIFAX-HUDDERSFIELD collected their fourth win in as many matches to stay out in front in the Yorkshire Inter District Union league.

But they needed an afternoon surge at the tail-end of the singles to bring home a 24-12 win over Teesside at Eaglescliffe.

The foursomes had been shared 6-6, but the visitors garnered 18 points after lunch, including winning all of the bottom six match-ups.

Halifax’s Mark Burkitt and Bradley Hall’s Andy Hare responded with a 2&1 defeat of Neil Hunter-Smith (Eaglescliffe) and Elliott Butterwoth (Middlesbrough), who had won their previous match together.

Middlesbrough’s Jack Ewbank and the home club’s Dave Lupton won 3&1 against another Huddersfield duo, Brad Tupman and Aron Schnacke, while Brad Hildreth (Billingham) and Ryan Riley (Eaglescliffe) produced a fabulous finale to defeat Bradley Hall’s Chris Lander and Jarred Hazelden (Outlane).

The Halifax-Huddersfield pairing had won together in the defeat of York, but were blown away by their opponents’ birdie-eagle-par-birdie-birdie finish.

Dewsbury’s Dan Hartley was paired with club-mate Ben Crowther and they won 3&2 against Darlington’s Nat Poole and Dean Bates, of Blackwell Grange.

Elliott Lister (Bradley Hall) and Tom Hunt (Meltham) were even more convincing winners, 5&4, as they played together for the first time to see off Jason Elliott (Saltburn) and Josh Thompson (Billingham), the latter playing with his fourth different partner in as many matches.

In the top singles match, Smith suffered his first loss of the season, to Schnacke, by one hole.

Hunter-Smith had endured a 6&5 loss to Lindrick’s Nathan Fell in his previous solo encounter and appeared to take it out on Morton, who was crushed 9&7.
