The ashes of former leading crown green bowler Gene Bardon were being buried at Hill Crest Bowling Club this afternoon.

Bardon, who died last June aged 71, was a three-times winner of the Classic, the big open tournament which has been staged at the Sowerby Bridge club since 1976.

The urn containing the ashes of Huddersfield’s Bardon, who made more than 100 appearances for Yorkshire, was being buried in the garden at 1pm.

Bardon, who played for Newsome WMC and Almondbury Cons, won the Yorkshire Merit crown in 1975, 1987 and 1992 and was Yorkshire president in 1995.
