The thirds were the only Calderdale team in action and they had a 45-30 success over Huddersfield Giants 1.
Calderdale made a strong start and built a healthy lead with an opening line-up of Pauline Williamson (GS), Heather Parkinson (GA), Georgina Parkinson (WA), Hollie Thomas (C), Megan Woodworth (WD), Suzanne Forrest (GD) and Becky Wood (GK).
The front pair had to work hard to make it 15-10 after 15 minutes, aided by Calderdale’s defenders picking up most of the rebounds at the other end.
Forrest and Wood switched roles effectively and Wood and Woodworth made frequent interceptions but the lead was reduced to 21-18 at half time.
Jo Williamson and Kirsty Dow came on but the third quarter proved a difficult one as Huddersfield shot well and Calderdale’s attack struggled.
Calderdale kept their focus and with extra possession gained by Thomas and Forrest led 28-26 entering the last 15 minutes.
Libby Illingworth came on at goal attack and Jo Williamson and Thomas switched. The defensive effort paid off as Huddersfield’s shooters tired, missing shots and leaving rebounds for Dow and Forrest.
The attack was bolstered by Illingworth’s near perfect shooting and Calderdale ran away with the contest to boost confidence prior to Saturday’s game against Whitcliffe at Halifax High (9am).
Calderdale’s other teams play in Bradford at 12.45, the firsts against Harrogate Phoenix and the seconds against Wakefield Wildcats.
