Brooksbank through to National finals

The Year 10 netball squad at Brooksbank School continue to go from strength to strength as once again the team have qualified for National Finals to be held in Basildon, Essex, next month.

Representing West Yorkshire at the regional round, Brooksbank were competing in the under 16 age group against the very best teams from Yorkshire and Humberside.

The day started well with an excellent 9-2 win against Hymers College, a 7-6 win against Ashville College and a 13-5 victory against Wales High School.

Shooters Hannah Boyle and Scarlett Lake were on great form, finding the net with ease while in defence Evie Andrews, Milly Bake and Hayley Sharp made it difficult for the other teams to get into their stride.

It was important that this excellent form was to continue as the team came up against local rivals, The Grammar School at Leeds. Despite playing some excellent netball, and every effort from captain Alice Smith to rally the Brooksbank outfit, Leeds proved difficult to keep up with and defeated the Calderdale side 13-8.

Another narrow 7-6 defeat against Milthorpe left the team with lots of work to do at the end of the day. Wins were needed from the remaining two games if Brooksbank were to qualify.

Substitutes Jenny Tan and Charlotte Todd brought another dimension to the team as they went on to beat Wolfreton High school 14-2. Going in to the final round GSAL had already qualified and the one remaining place was to be decided in the last game between Brooksbank and Sheffield High School.

The result was a very closely contested game and was goal for goal throughout. However, a 7-6 win in the dying seconds brought a nail biting end to the tournament and secured Brooksbank their place in the finals where they will represent Yorkshire and Humberside.

Head of PE and coach Teresa Banks said she was very proud of the girls achievement, adding: “The girls have worked extremely hard this season and have shown great dedication and a high degree of commitment to training.

To qualify a year young is a credit to the girls hard work and the high degree of netballing talent within this squad.”
