Calderdale hit ground running after the break

Calderdale firsts got their 2012 campaign off to a flying start with a convincing 57-29 win over Harrogate Challengers in the West Yorkshire Super League.

The teams were evenly matched in the first quarter in Bradford but the attacking combination of Sam Grace and Roxy Rothery gave Calderdale the edge. Rothery dominated the shooting circle, aided by Grace’s accurate passing.

In defence Lee Davies and Sophia Samuels were forcing Harrogate’s attack into errors and the first quarter ended 14-10.

Calderdale produced some free-flowing netball in the run up to half time with Samuels intercepting at will and the defence turning over loose balls for the attack to capitalise. The half finished with Calderdale in command at 28-17.

In the third quarter Calderdale made changes, with Lauren Liburn coming on as wing attack and Kate Ineson at wing defence, Pia Rattigan moving to centre.

Harrogate also made changes in their shooting circle but Calderdale’s defence increased the pressure and forced errors.

Calderdale’s player of the match Kim Roy capitalised on the turnover ball as Calderdale took a 20-goal lead into the final quarter.

Harrogate reverted back to their original shooting combination but were unable to make serious inroads into the deficit and Calderdale ran out impressive winners.
