Halifax fighters impress

IT was a decent night for home club boxers when Halifax Police ABC held their third show of the season on Friday night.

Five of their seven fighters won on a show which was not quite as well attended as usual.

The plus points for the host club were wins for promising youngster Chris Godridge and for Matthew Whelan in his comeback fight as well as another success for super heavyweight Dale Booth.

Kyle Scully had a unanimous points win and there was a morale-boosting success for youngster Luke Warner.

However, the club’s recent Yorkshire ABA title winner Vinny Atkins narrowly lost to Ben Davies in an excellent contest while the club’s female fighter, Charlene Milligan, lost the closest of decisions to Rachel Rawlings of Malthouse BC.

Godridge took the junior boxer of the night award for his unanimous points success over Ambrose Gaskin of the Airedale club. It was his second good display in a row after suffering a bad knockout earlier in the campaign.

Whelan just got the verdict over Keighley’s Luke Simpson while Booth, a 33-year-old wagon driver who was a latecomer to the sport, made it six wins from six when he got the thumbs up from all the judges against York’s Sam Cade.

Atkins really needs a fourth round because he always starts slowly and comes through strongly. He left himself with just too much to do against Davies.

Halifax Police BC are hoping to extend their season with a show in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund to be held at their Ladyship Mills headquarters on June 29.

The plan is for the show to feature host club fighters against Army representatives.

RESULTS (Halifax Police ABC unless stated): Luke Warner bt Evan Colley (Malthouse); Chris Godridge bt Ambrose Gaskin (Airedale); Kyle Scully bt Jack Catlow (Skerton); Charlene Milligan lost to Rachel Rawlings (Malthouse); Johnny Smith (Raging Bull) beat Rakib Jilani (Keighley); 6) Danny Little (City of Hull) lost to Steve Mennelli (West Leeds); Wesley Baxendale (Hebden Bridge) beat John Walker (Clayton); 8, Vinny Atkins lost to Ben Davies (Sheffield BC); Matthew Whelan bt Luke Simpson (Keighley); 10) Dale Booth bt Sam Cade (York).

HALIFAX Police ABC’s Jack Sellars was involved in a tremendous fight in the Junior Yorkshire ABAs at Kellingley Working Men’s Club on Sunday.

The Northowram fighter was beaten on points by Sadjit Majid, with the boxer from Sharkeys ABC of Leeds proving just the stronger.

However, the 17-year-old did his reputation little harm and is earning a reputation on the circuit for being a tough opponent.
