Irish crown fantastic season by sealing league and cup double

Halifax Irish Under 14s completed a Huddersfield League and cup double to round off an excellent season for the team.

They lifted the Huddersfield League Cup following a dominant performance in a 5-0 victory over YMCA.

The opening goal coming from the left winger Rhys Thomas and that was all that separated the teams at half time. However, Irish grew stronger and more confident in the second half and a fine fluent passing move started by Daniel Keene and Joe Grimley ended with Adam Whitaker being brought down in the box for a Irish penalty and Mark Everingham stepped up to convert for a 2-0 lead.

Outstanding goal keeping from Matt Bridges and strong defending from Jacob Shaw, Alex Dale and Luke Bridges kept the Huddersfield team at bay before leading scorer Adam Whitaker netted to make it 3-0.

Further goals from Euan Davies and a second for Rhys Thomas sealed the victory.

A visit from Linthwaite FC, who beat Irish in the previous year’s final arrived at West Vale in midweek with Paul Keane’s side needing the three points to secure the league title.

Leo Zito opened the scoring with a first half 20 yard volley ending up in the bottom corner of the net. James Denny was then involved in a set piece early in the second half which was finished by an outstanding effort Jacob Brown that put Irish 2-0 up.

A goal from a very enthusiastic Linthwaite side brought it back to 2-1 and led to a very nervous last 14 minutes but the Halifax team hung on with some stout defending once again Alex Dale in the thick of it.
