TEAM bosses Chris Mear and Tommy Ward took great encouragament from Sunday’s match involving the Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union’s best players and rising stars at Crosland Heath.

The annual seniors versus juniors warm-up was scrapped in favour of a teams of four competition and Halifax’s Jamie Smith and Hanging Heaton’s Josh Morton were two players to earn special praise.

Teams comprised two seniors and two juniors to play a stableford competition off scratch, with the best two scores to count on the first six holes, the best three to count on the middle six holes and all four scores to count on the last six holes.

The winning team was Toby Garrett (Crosland Heath), Mytholmroyd’s former Union match play champion Aaron Schnacke (Huddersfield), current Union junior match play champion Tom Williams (Huddersfield) and Gary Moolman (Huddersfield), who had a fantastic score of 110 stableford points, which equates to two under par for the 18 holes.

They played the first six holes in two under, the middle six holes in one over, and the last six holes when all four players counted in a very impressive one under.

In second place was the team of Mark Birkett (Halifax), Andy Wilford (Huddersfield), Corey Avison (Marsden) and Josh McAspurn (Marsden) with 106 points.

The Crosland Heath course was in excellent condition, an obvious factor in the scoring being so good, together with the benign conditions.

Mear said juniors Smith and Morton had particularly caught the eye.

“Jamie played extremely well with three birdies and four bogeys for a round of one over par,” he said.

“This was Josh’s introduction to Union golf, and he acquitted himself very well. He is only 14 with a handicap of nine but he played very well and has a promising Union future ahead of him.

“Both Tommy and I were pleased with the way that the fixture turned out and are looking forward to the season.”

The seniors play champions Bradford at Shipley on Sunday, May 15 in their opening contest, a week after the juniors travel to Headingley to face Leeds in their first match.
