Long mark does trick for Regan

Mark Regan of Brighouse Sports made it two wins in three years when he regained the Elland Association Men’s Merit title on Sunday.

Regan had a 21-6 victory over West End’s John Hamer in the final of the Taylor Bowls-sponsored competition on a tricky green at Greenroyd BC.

The final produced some excellent bowling. Hamer played his customary short marks to the edge of the green, leaving Regan very little room, to lead 4-1.

With Hamer leading 6-5, the game swung dramatically Regan’s way as he led into the corners. Left hander Hamer had no answer as his woods slid on the falling marks in both directions. Regan dominated with five pairs and singles to run out.

Regan had began his day by beating Steve Lowther ( Elland C&BC ) 21-12,leading throughout. He followed up with another comfortable win, by 21-9 against David Blackburn (West End BC ).

In his semi-final, Regan was up against it as David Pollard (Bradley & Colne) opened with two pairs. It was level at seven and nine before Pollard, playing a mark over the crown, put together a break of seven to lead 16-9.

With the score 19-12 to Pollard, Regan bowled superbly in the corners and with three pairs and singles ran out to win 21-19.

Hamer opened with a good 21-9 win over Roy Watters (Kingston BC). His next opponent was Ian Smith (Ackroydon Vics), who could never land a blow as Hamer, playing his diamond shaped marks, never allowed his opponent any room and closed out the game 21-10.

In his quarter-final against last year’s winner Jason Watters (Kingston BC), Hamer opened with a nine break and finished with two pairs for a 21-11 win.

Semi-final opponent Nigel Mitchell (Elland C& BC) also failed to make inroads as Hamers dominance of the short marks gave him an 18-4 lead. Mitchell came back to finish on 15.

Quarter-finals: M. Regan 21 D. Blackburn 9, D. Pollard 21 B. Malone 20, N. Mitchell 21 L. Holmes 20, J. Watters 11 J. Hamer 21.
