Mear’s men settle for runners-up spot

Halifax-Huddersfield failed in their bid to topple reigning champions Sheffield and win this year’s Yorkshire Inter-District Union League title.

They were beaten 23-13 in yesterday’s silverware decider at Ogden and Chris Mear’s much-improved side had to settle for the runners-up spot.

Mear has praised his players saying: “We have had a brilliant season finishing second in the league for the first time since I was Union president in 2004.

“I congratulate every one of them for all the effort and concentration they have put in”

Sheffield went into the contest between the unbeaten pair with a two point lead, Halifax-Huddersfield having had two matches washed out.

The visitors led 8-4 after the foursomes and then won seven of the 12 singles contests with another halved.
