Plant: Heath just need to keep on keeping on

Heath coach Kevin Plant wants his side to continue their impressive pre-season form when they open their Yorkshire One season against Wath Upon Dearne at West Vale tomorrow.

Heath go into the game on the back of a hat trick of wins; edging warm up fixtures against West Park Leeds and North East One neighbours Old Crossleyans before beating Doncaster Phoenix 11-10 in a Yorkshire Shield fixture last weekend.

“We haven’t scored many tries, but we haven’t conceded many either and our performances have been good,” said Plant, whose side look on course to avoid a repeat of last season’s nightmare start, which saw tomorrow’s opponents romp to a 50-point win.

“Last year we had all kinds of problems early on with injuries and player unavailability and we took a real hammering in that first game.

“This summer has been much better; we’ve had good training numbers, we’ve been able to do the work we needed to do and we’re stronger in a lot of areas across the team.

“There is certainly more depth to the squad.”

Two of Plant’s new recruits - the Elland rugby league duo of Cayci Pearson and Ben Hinsley, who both played reserve football for Halifax - are unavailable tomorrow while they finish their 13-a-side commitments.

But with several members of last season’s successful Colts side pushing for places and the Huddersfield YMCA forward Darren Neilly also on board, Plant remains confident.

“We haven’t made huge changes, but we’ve strengthened in the areas we needed to,” he said.

“We’ve got some good players; the key to our season will be how successful we are at keeping them fit and on the field, both on Saturday afternoons and during the week at training.”
