The points flowed again but for the opening quarter is was a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ following the high-stakes win over Barnsley the Saturday before.

With seven players missing from the previous week’s side, Crocs were slow out of the blocks and Roundhegians made them pay for uncharacteristic defensive lapses by scoring two converted tries and adding a penalty to take a 17-0 lead.

However, Crocs are much more resilient these days and with a greater strength in depth of players, and they worked their way back into the game.

Joe Gallagher gained reward for his good support play by crossing the line twice in quick succession. Joe Stott converted one of these and the visitors were back in the game, cheered on by a large following bathing in the afternoon sunshine.

Just before half-time, James Wainwright put the Crocs ahead with a well taken try. Stott converted and Crocs went into the break with a lead they never looked like surrendering.

Indeed, the second half was a one-sided affair with the Broomfield side going on to top 50 points for the fifth consecutive game.

Billy Hammond went over shortly after the whistle for the second half was sounded, Stott converting from wide out.

Cameron Brannan who has had an outstanding season since converting to hooker, then scored the first of his hat-trick of tries.

Veterans Kevin McGill and Chris Seymour came off the bench and seasonal debutant McGill was prominent with some strong runs.

The only time the home side threatened in the second half was when an ambitious pass from the visitors was intercepted and the grateful recipient galloped 60 yards to score Roundhegians’ only points of the second half.

Brannan crossed twice and Wainwright notched his second, Stott adding two more conversions.

There was a nice gesture at the end of the game when both sets of players applauded Andy Day from the field in what may be the final appearance of a long and distinguished rugby playing career.
