Runners up spot secures promotion

Halifax Girls under 12s secured promotion for their next tournament after finishing second in their latest round of matches.

They opened their series with a 4-1 success over Huddersfield, taking an early lead through Robyn Fawkes. Good work in midfield by Annie Denton led to Katie Illingworth getting the second goal before a passing move between Fawkes and illingworth enabled Fawkes to grab the third

Illingworth then scored the fourth after which Halifax were caught on the break to allow Huddersfield to net a consolation goal.

The second game against Wakefield proved a tougher proposition with Halifax running out narrow 1-0 winners. Despite early pressure Halifax were unable to find a goal. Leah Kalter and Jessica Wilson were strong in the Halifax defence to keep Wakefield at bay before good work down the right by Dahlia Al Jawad saw her cross to Illingworth and her accurate shot found the back of the net.

Another even game saw Halifax edge out Driffield 2-1. The deadlock was broken with a shot from Fawkes. Driffield quickly hit back to pull the scores level and some good saves from Regan Midgley prevented them taking the lead. Halifax’s efforts finally paid off with a goal from Illingwerth to give her side the win.

The final game against Leeds proved the decider with both teams having remained unbeaten Leeds started the stronger, winning the midfield battle and despite excellent defending by Kalter and Wilson, they took the lead. Halifax tried to pull the goal back but were caught on the break to concede a second goal.

Halifax dug deep and upped their work rate, pinning Leeds back into their own half. However, this pressure could not be converted into goals and Halifax had to be content with second place on the day.
